eDerm is the result of more than three years of development and research
by a team of dermatologists, primary care physicians, software engineers
and health services researchers. In 1998, the first version of eDerm was
designed for desktop computers running under Windows.
Our goal was an innovative solution to improve primary care providers'
competency and confidence in evaluating suspicious skin lesions. We created
a practical, algorithm-based tool to help primary care physicians quickly
and accurately at the point of care. We chose an algorithm approach because
physicians are accustomed to seeing clinical guidelines in this format
and this approach easily reveals the logic and sequence of steps in evaluating
suspicious skin lesions.
eDerm development was funded by the National Cancer Institute, grant
#2R44CA75906-02.
